Jeffrey Tjendra

1DD: How to make an idea come true

TJENDRA: “Own the problem first, then building and selling the idea becomes much easier.”

"Know what exactly you are talented and passionate about. Then Understand the status quo of how your chosen sector works. Break it into parts. Find out all problems. Organize them into parts, flow and hierarchy. Learn until you know how the system operates.
During the process of owning the problem, ideas will emerge easier. Selling become easier because you start learning how to solve the right problems with your idea."

Giovani Castelucci

1DD: How to make an idea come true

CASTELUCCI: “An idea is like a plant: you need to sow it, water it everyday and to be patient to see their growth.”

"Sometimes we forget to sow it: we have an excellent idea but don't put it in the world, so it doesn't exist. Sometimes we forget to water it: so it's in the world but doesn't properly evolve. But the most important is: if you look everyday for the fruits, you will get anxious because they won't be there. You have to keep watering it everyday and when you look behind, you will see how much it grew."

Giovani Castelucci | Designer at DAÓ and Founder of Visitei

Giovani Castelucci is co-founder at DAÓ, graphic design studio focused in cultural initiatives. In 2014 he founded Visitei, a web-based platform that facilitates, organizes and nurture student visits to design companies, having assured more than 200 people the opportunity to have an insider look to the participating companies.

Ellis Bartholomeus

1DD: How to make an idea come true

BARTHOLOMEUS: “Playing around with dreams + ideas make opportunities available, in play you can become a hero.”

"As a designer I learned about the value of play, in play people learn faster and better, and are open for elicit emotions, the transfer of experiences, insights and learnings inside the game can be taken outside the magic circle of play :) the state of play) to real life. As a designer I hope to facilitate and enable the state of play, but the player is always in control to make the game happen, so for me designing play and games is the ultimate way of co-creating, allowing the user the autonomy to play around with the game of life."

Ellis Bartholomeus| Play Alchemist at Ellis in Wonderland

In 1996 I graduated as a product designer at the Design Academy on ‘Men and Information’. Since then I have created signage, user-interfaces, graphic design, websites, interactive applications and serious games. I am eager to get more in-depth involved with the use of play and how to apply game elements as a medium and tool and not just for fun. How to design motivation, and how to co-create the state of play as an intervention for change. I wish to make people play life more.

Gustavo Greco

1DD: How to make an idea come true

GRECO: “Nothing is impossible.”

"I have a frustrating quality: “ To me nothing is impossible. With effort and attention you can achieve anything”

As my favourite poet (Mario Quintana) would say:

Of Utopias
*free translation

If things are unattainable ... well !
It is no reason not to want them..
Sad the paths, if was not
The distant presence of stars!

DAS UTOPIAS
*Original in brazilian Portuguese

Se as coisas são inatingíveis... ora!
Não é motivo para não querê-las...
Que tristes os caminhos, se não fora
A presença distante das estrelas!"

Pedro Segreto

1DD: How to make an idea come true

SEGRETO: “Doing is the best way of learning!”

"I am not sure if it was Jean Cocteau or Mark Twain that said: Not knowing it was impossible, he went and did it!
However , what matters in this emblematic phrase is not the author but his incitement to do it. It is a call to action , mobilisation and engagement. After all , there is no better way to engage other people to act, than by doing. It is much easier to achieve someone’s commitment when ideas are already in practice. I organize monthly meetings and lectures on design and technology - Convescote. We’ve already done more than 60 meetings and 100 lectures. At first, they were close friends who spoke . Today, with the admiration we have achieved, inviting new participants is an easy task. So do not wait for ideal conditions, put your gang on the street and learn by doing!"

Fabricio Dore

1DD: How to make an idea come true

DORE: “Support and inspire the collective effort to bring ideas into reality.”

"It's impossible to build great ideas nowadays as a sole innovator. You need to get surrounded by talented people, either as part of a team you lead or as peers on the venture.

The best collaboration projects are born with a clear purpose and that's what will make people focus but also help them find energy on the most challenging moments of the journey of building something new."

Eduardo Sanches

1DD: How to make an idea come true

SANCHES: “Take a step means believing an idea can become something greater than you imagined.”

"Don’t wait for your idea to be ready to put it into practice. If it appears to be mature too early on, chances are someone has already taken this path . Keep an eye on your principles and that which has guided the creation of your idea, but know that something surprisingly different may appear along the way . Prototype, test, rework and learn. Take your life luggage and know-how to enrich the concept, but be ready to abandon them along the way if necessary. Be aware of the surroundings of the idea and the new connections that may arise."

Eduardo Sanches | Industrial designer at Whirlpool LATAM

WENTZ: “Reduce the idea to its essence and remove everything that seems less important.”

MELLO: “Dream big, work hard and stay humble.”

"Everyone is a designer! Maybe you just haven´t realized it yet, but the genes of design are inside of you, no matter which school you attended or even if you had attended school or not. The best designer I ever met in my life (my father) never went to formal school. Design is a journey of empathy, collaboration and experimentation. It´s simple like that! If you are able to apply this three things in everything you do, you can impact other people’s lives and redesign the world, one story at a time. "

Daniel Egger

1DD: How to make an idea come true

EGGER: “A brief moment of time can change everything. Embrace it and design a future that generates value.”

"A brief moment of time can change everything. Those instant interactions with society ripple into the future. Experiences from the past, our sensory perception, our thoughts, present in this specific point in time. And in this bubble of time ideas are generated. Those that, when we decide to embrace, can grow into something big that will change our life. It is our choice if we want to design the future A future where we are part of, are integrated and where we generate for us and society new value."

SINGULANI: “Believe. And if you can make people believe in you, its just a matter of focus, hard work and time.”

"Most of the times the greatest and fearest dogmas in our professional lifes were never really challenged. And the main reason for that is because people don't BELIEVE that this change is possible. So things remains the same... Thats why in design teams there is an irreplaceable role for those almost naive people that truly think that everything is possible. With this kind of energy around, the process flows easier and the results are always surprising in a very positive way."

Mauricio Noronha

1DD: How to make an idea come true

NORONHA: “Involve people to evolve humanity.”

"More important than thinking about what, how, or why bring an idea from the intangible world and compose it into our material reality, is to think with whom do this. The world is made of people and they are the way to get to anywhere you may dream of. Every living thing communicates and connects to create something greater than itself. And mankind, being an emotional being, is reached through the heart. We must speak about love, passion and make people fall in love with a creation, or better yet, create something captivating, involving everyone in the way. And when people come together, feel, engage and participate, what happens is something called.. magic."

Paulo Bottasso

1DD: How to make an idea come true

BOTTASSO: "Put the actors together! Research, create and test collaboratively. Have ownership and engagement."

"It is very difficult to get an idea out of the paper alone, needs to engage and connect people in a horizontal environment. Switch the people’s role, let them experience for themselves and by the others. As much points of view that you have, better. Play with the depth; Be shallow and inconsequential, serious and profound. Experts and laymen. Empathise. taking an idea out of the paper is not a linear process. Complex problems, complex solutions. Explore, analyse, create and test in spiral; simple, fast and cheap. Learn, analyse, synthesize, create more, test more, be wrong. Make small tests. Switch place once again. Make another research. Every step you take, your search become more refined. Bring it all back to the collective. An idea owned by many is a collective dream, with a lot of wills to become true. Engage."

Kigge Hvid

1DD: How to make an idea come true

HVID: “By dreaming it!”

"After coming up with a big amazing dream everything else is just work. It can be hard, it can be fun - but it needs to be done.

So find partners to work with, great people with experience and others without. Then find knowledge - very often others have dreamt the same dream, so see if there is anything out there that can inspire you, anything that works better than your idea does. Then test if your dream/idea actually works for the people they are meant for. Talk to them and listen. After that develop your idea, test it and make it work. And along the line you will need money. Find a way to raise them, create a business plan and look at crowd funding, investors, foundations. "

Andrew Shea

1DD: How to make an idea come true

SHEA: “Get started and make it simple. ”

Many designers want to have a fully-formed plan for their idea before starting to realize it. I believe design often follows more of an innovative process rather than a creative process, one that allows us to refine or make sense of content rather than create it from scratch. Get started by throwing everything you know about the idea/dream (and some things that don't directly relate to it) on the wall to see what sticks. Then work hard to make your idea simple enough for people to understand, adopt, and promote it."

Efrat Friedland

1DD: How to make an idea come true

FRIEDLAND: “You need a good mirror and people around you”

"You have an idea of a new product or service. Ideally, you will share it at a moment you think is right, with people you think are right. Some will like the idea, others will try convincing you to stop pursuing it. It could also be, that everyone will try convincing you to do exactly that. This is why you need a good mirror. If you honestly believe in your idea, you will find the mirror an excellent tool to encourage yourself to keep pursuing it. You should use it as often as you need, standing firmly infant of it and realising YOU CAN DO IT. You need those people who do not believe in your idea, as much as you need the people who do. The ones that don’t, will force you to prove them wrong. The ones that do, might be your partners to execute your idea as it is not wise to work alone."

GEKELER: “Let's dolaborate now!”

"In our complex world you need people from various disciplines, cultures and perspectives to make an idea happen and to create something meaningful. Neither engineers, business people nor designers should solve the problems alone. Only if different perspectives are brought together we can find solutions that are ready for unknown futures.

In order to achieve this goal, you can make use of design and design thinking to get things done together and to co-create desirable solutions. So let's DO things & COLLABORATE!

Let's dolaborate!"

BASTIANELLO: “Design is not unique to the designer, we have to be sure that there is always something to improve.”

"Everybody can be the catalyst agent between problem and solution, just need the right tools and a holistic overview. Since the first object was created and how it changed society we note how important it is to man the significance of objects that are part of your day and the evolution of these creations. We exercise the design every day, from simple tasks to complex, in how we see and plan things.
The primitive connection between the idea and the materialization makes the designer a privileged professional, a person able to understand the whole process involving the human factor and technical in everything he creates."

Lee Davis

1DD: How to make an idea come true

DAVIS: “Question everything. Break all the rules. Go rogue.”

"The ancient skeptic Sextus Empiricus posited that by suspending all judgment we achieve a state of ataraxia - peace of mind. This pure state of openmindedness, what Zen Buddhists refer to as Shoshin (beginners mind) - a curiosity, inquisitiveness, openness and lack of preconception wherein we question everything, take nothing for granted, and simply ask: Why? Why are things this way? Why must they be? Every parent faces this epistemological regress argument when a child continues to ask why ad infinitum.
Like children, designers begin as novices. Shunryu Suzuki said it well in Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind: “In the beginner’s mind there are many possibilities, in the expert’s mind there are few.” Only when questioning assumptions can we imagine and envision new possibilities. Why not?"

"A designer is someone who can create both solutions *and* problems. Anyone who creates or does anything is guaranteed to produce one of those outcomes: a solution or a problem. Being reflective about what outcome has resulted, especially when a new problem has been made, is important. But it can also be paralyzing. Making errors makes you not want to do anything. But those who do nothing, don’t make new solutions. And those who do something are guaranteed to make a few problems. Don’t be afraid."
